IFC's The Rental will make you think twice about booking that AirBnb

Dave Franco's directorial debut is a horrifying look at a vacation rental that goes very wrong.

The Dave Franco-directed thriller managed to score an impressive win over the weekend. Screening in 251 theaters and drive-ins in addition to being available via video-on-demand, IFC's The Rental, racked up over $420,000 in revenue. Naturally, the scale for success has been adjusted for given this is the summer of 2020.

The film stars Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Jeremy Allen White, and Sheila Vand as two couples enjoying a weekend getaway at a scenic Airbnb nestled on a cliff along the Oregon coast.

The film almost immediately begins to spiral as the couples have a more than awkward encounter with the property's caretaker. Things become particularly scary when Sheila Vand's character finds a camera in a shower head.

The success of the directorial debut from Dave Franco should prove telling as the model of releasing films moving forward. Studios are planning to screen films in what theaters they can while simultaneously making films available for on-demand streaming. Titles like Bill & Ted Face the Music and The New Mutants will be the next to embrace the model.
