Kreator Carry the Torch for Thrash Ahead of the Klash of the Titans Tour

- By Ramon Gonzales

Legend Mille Petrozza discusses the durability of the genre, how their Klash tour has become a brand synonymous with the sound and why Chile will always be a special place for Kreator.

Legendary thrash pillars Kreator are set to embark on their joint North American run with the Klash of the Titans Tour alongside Testament this week. The comprehensive 34-date trek continues the Klash of the Titans banner that Kreator has forged since the release of their celebrated 2022 Hate Uber Alles LP. Thus far taking on bands like Sepultura, In Flames, the latest run with Testament and an upcoming EU/UK leg with Anthrax, Kreator continues to proudly carry the torch of timeless thrash and serve as ambassadors of the sound.

Ahead of the start of the next leg of the Klash of the Titans tour, Kreator will stream their epic evening from Santiago, Chile late last year.  The pro-shot, multi-camera set was directed by Carlos Toro Venegas for Abysmo Films and documented the band's triumphant evening at Movistar Arena - commanding thousands of their most loyal fans with a career-spanning set.

The kinship between Kreator and Chile is one that runs deep. The band, in particular, Millie Petrozza, have long emphasized the connection between the two. Back in 2009, Kreator would work with director Carlos Toro, capturing the band's live performance of “Destroy What Destroys You” for the band's Hordes of Chaos LP. Apart from the ravenous appetite the Chilean people show for Kreator, the clip underscores the well-established bond that thrives between the German thrash legends and the city of Santiago.

Speaking with Petrozza, the thrash music pillar shared his vantage point on the enduring quality of the genre and how the Klash of the Titans tour reflects that. He spoke fondly of the relationship between the Chilean fans and the band and emphasized why this live performance from last year was something special enough to preserve on camera.

Kreator has been on a pretty relentless touring run since the release of Hate Uber Alles. What is the energy like among the band right now as you get ready to begin another North American run?

Petrozza - The energy was never better! We are in a strong state of mind ready to see our fans in North America again.

The Klash of the Titans banner really does seem to becoming a brand on its own. Sepultura, In Flames, Testament and Anthrax later this year. What about all the bands that have been a part of this run meets the criteria of a Titan for you personally?

Petrozza - Personally, we love all the bands we pick for the KLASH. It’s usually a gathering of old friends and a great opportunity for us to give our fans an amazing night of metal!

As a band more than four decades steeped in the culture, what has it been like seeing generations of fans at your shows?

Petrozza - Best thing is that we still see new faces coming every year. There’s no age limit whatsoever. We see kids coming with their parents or just very young metalheads discovering us. It´s fantastic!

What were some of the determining factors that led to selecting Santiago, Chile as the location for this filming? Especially given the band’s comprehensive touring schedule, what was it about Chile that you felt needed to be emphasized with this documented performance?

Petrozza - Chile is our second home! But see for yourself. We have a long history with Santiago and we were one of the first, if not THE first extreme metal band that played the country after the Pinochet regime. Our fans have never forgotten this!

For the remainder of the year you will be touring with Testament and Anthrax - venerated legends in thrash. What do you attribute the longevity of classic thrash to? What are some of the common aspects of bands like Kreator, Testament and Anthrax that work for established fans while still reaching new ones?

Petrozza - I have always been an Anthrax fan from their very first album and Testament have been close friends from day one! We all had our ups and downs over the years, but at this point you will see the strongest version of each band! Í can’t wait to hear Testament playing the old school set on our upcoming run and seeing Anthrax later in the year.

Thrash metal is stronger than ever!
