En route to the Latin American dates of their Lollapalooza run that include performances in Argentina, Chile and Brazil, alternative rock archetypes Jane's Addiction hosted a hometown affair that celebrated the band's near four decade residence.
Following the band's successful stretch last fall with Smashing Pumpkins on The Spirit On Fire Tour - their first in a decade - Jane's Addiction have emerged revitalized with news of more live dates, pending work on new material and rumored plans of a 35th anniversary commemoration of the band's seminal 1988 release, Nothing's Shocking. All of this despite going at it without founding guitarist Dave Navarro who continues to endure a battle with long haul Covid.
Holding court on the hallowed grounds of the Hollywood Palladium, Perry Farrell, guitarist Josh Klinghoffer (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers) along with founding members bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins curated a live set that framed the shelf life of one of alternative music's most definitive bodies of work.
Sourcing selections from the 1987 self-titled live release, the groundbreaking Nothing's Shocking album and their triumphant Ritual de lo Habitual full length, Jane' Addiction devoted their stage time to revisiting some of their most evergreen contributions.
Essentials like "Up the Beach", "Ocean Size" and "Mountain Song" paired powerfully with some of the band's earliest work like ""1%", ""Whores" and "Chip Away". Assembling the kind of set that reintroduced new fans to the band's continued prowess while reaffirming their staying power to the most hardcore fans, Jane's Addiction soared.
The band even managed to treat the house to a showing of new music, the band's first in more than a decade with a live rendition of "True Love" to kick off their encore. The track is the sole new offering since 2013's standalone single "Another Soulmate" - an auspicious sign of more to come from the alt culture legends.
Underscoring the jovial energy that resonated throughout the set, Jane's Addiction closed out with "Stop" - the turbo-charged opener from Ritual de Lo Habitual - a move that rallied and rewarded the fans that have rode until the very end with the band.
Nearly four decades in and Jane's Addiction seems to be getting better with age.
