Prog black metal duo Tómarúm excel in emotional depth on 'Condemned to a Life of Grief'

- By Matt Rushton

Atmospheric black metal / tech-death twosome Tómarúm prepare for their debut full-length record, Ash in Realms of Stone Icons, with the Knotfest premiere of their first visual from the effort.

Only forming in 2019, it's been a rapid ascent for Atlanta, Georgia's Tómarúm, with only a demo and an EP totalling three tracks to their name before being picked up by Prosthetic Records to release their first LP on May 6.

Describing the band as either black metal or tech-death would be reductive, for 'Condemned to a Life of Grief' showcases truly gifted songwriters with a very exciting future. The track begins in a frenetic fashion, with inventive basslines and swathing guitars backed up beautifully by luscious strings, before giving way to a stunning piano not often found in genres like these. The song only gets more expansive from there, taking influence from the blackgaze of MØL and Unreqvited through to the brutality and technicality of Cryptopsy and Necrophagist, all by way of their unique approach to song structures and instrumentals.

Guitarist, vocalist and programmer for the duo, Kyle Walburn, said of the song:

Condemned to a Life of Grief was the first song written for the band, as well as my first real attempt writing music in general. Intended as an introductory track, the song makes use of buildup and repetition and gradually picks up the pace, ending triumphantly with a shred solo. Lyrically, the song describes the onset of my struggles with mental health, setting the story for our hour-long exercise in anguish

The last time Cigarettes After Sex played a headline show in the UK was in a pre-Covid world, and the extensive queue line full of eager fans outside of Manchester’s O2 Apollo on the first night of the band’s return tour is hard proof of just how much they’ve been missed on these shores.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
