A24, the already legendary movie production company behind titles like Hereditary, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, The Witch, and much much more, has just released the trailer for another upcoming guaranteed cult hit, After Yang. From Kogonada, the acclaimed Korean filmmaker behind 2017's Columbus, the film is based on the short story "Saying Goodbye to Yang" by Alexander Weinstein.
The official synopsis reads: "When his young daughter's beloved companion — an android named Yang — malfunctions, Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to repair him. In the process, Jake discovers the life that has been passing in front of him, reconnecting with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith) and daughter across a distance he didn't know was there." Justin H. Min, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Sarita Choudhury, Clifton Collins Jr. and Haley Lu Richardson also star.
After filming in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed After Yang's release until it had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on July 8, 2021. The film just had its North American premiere on January 21, 2022 at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, which is given to a feature film that focuses on science or technology as a theme, or depicts someone in a scientific field as a major character.
Kogonada has been receiving widespread acclaim for the film, and it currently sits at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics calling a meditative and enlightening take on memories and grief that's beautiful, creative, and compelling.
'After Yang' arrives in theaters and streams exclusively on Showtime March 4th.
