David Cronenberg has long been heralded for his contributions to cinema since he started making films at the end of the 60s, especially when it comes to horror. More specifically, Cronenberg is considered one of the founding filmmakers of the body horror subgenre, which he all but helped perfect with disturbing films like Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly.

Even now as he reaches the impressive age of 80, Cronenberg is showing no signs of slowing down - even if studios aren't as interested in the visceral kind of physical terror he brings to the screen. His last film was 2014's Map to the Stars, with frequent collaborator Viggo Mortensen claiming that the long gap has been due to difficulty finding financing for future projects. Even famous, esteemed directors aren't totally immune to the turbulence of the film industry.

But that's all in the past now, as Cronenberg is officially returning to the big screen with a new original: Crimes of the Future. "As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution."

The film promises to be a true return to the director's roots, so anyone who's squeamish may want to take a pass on this one. As for the rest of us, there's the teaser trailer below to sink our teeth into: A reminder that one of the best to ever do it still seems to very well have the right stuff.

'Crimes of the Future' will premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival with an official release to be determined.
