Among the genre’s most proven, steadfast supporters of the culture, Killswitch Engage crush with the kind of consistency that has defined their legacy for their more than two decades of domination.
During the band’s appearance at Knotfest Los Angeles, the directive was clear from the get go - get in gear. Though guitarist Adam D may have articulated that command a bit differently, “Get your thumbs out of your asses and get the pit movin’!”
Opting to open with newer cuts like “Hate By Design” from Incarnate and “The Crownless King” from their most recent full length “Atonement”, the selections proved just as effective as KSE essentials like “Rose of Sharyn” and the powerful mainstay in “My Last Serenade”.
Few bands would have the confidence or the quality of catalog to be able to pair entries nearly two decades in the same set, let alone back-to-back but that fact speaks to the consistency that has become the standard mode of operation for the Massachusetts stalwarts.
Thus the set played out in similar fashion, modern era Killswitch in selections like “Us Against the World” and “Strength of the Mind” pushed the agenda of PMA while flexing the band’s panache for searing, squealing guitars and percussive pummel. Classics like “My Curse” and “The End of Heartache” reiterated the enduring quality of songs that we’re obviously built to last.
Speaking to the health and spirit of heavy music, frontman Jesse Leach heaped praise on the fans for their support and their participation before closing with their celebratory victory lap. Blazing through their timeless tribute to Ronnie James Dio with a rendition of “Holy Diver,” Killswitch proved to be metal’s Keepers of the Faith.
