French metal powerhouse Gojira secured their place in the history books last week. Enlisted to perform for the opening ceremony of the XXXIII Olympic Games, Gojira teamed with opera singer Marina Viotti for a special performance that embraced French folklore and showcases the artistic breadth of extreme music.
Performing the iconic song, "Ah, Ca Ira", translated to "It'll Be Fine" - the song is synonymous with the French Revolution and was featured as party of the "Liberte" segment of the ceremony. Apart from Gojira's unrelenting performance, the showing was underscored by the spectacle of the band blaring from the side of a castle, bolstered by bursts of flame and red streams symbolic of the bloody era of resistance of the French Revolution.
To really emphasize just how uninhibited the Gojira set was, the broadcast segment started with a beheaded Marie Antoinette singing into the camera in a showing that was beautiful, brilliant and brazen in a way that spoke to the band's inability to play it safe.
Speaking with New York Times, Joe Duplantier confided a sincere sense of pressure given the kind of audience this particular performance would reach. Duplantier understood that this was an opportunity for Gojira to stand tall for, “the whole metal community on the world stage”. Exceeding any expectation, Gojira delivered the kind of showing that bridged hight art with heavy music, all while proudly emphasizing their French lineage.

Melding cultural relevance, historic defiance, artistic sophistication and heavy music's sharp edge, Gojira earned their own gold in Paris and affirmed their legendary rank among extreme music's all time greats.
Ce vendredi 26 juillet 2024, un cap a été franchi pour la scène metal. Gojira est entré dans l’histoire en devenant le premier groupe de metal à performer pour une cérémonie d’ouverture des Jeux Olympiques, dans leur pays, à Paris.
Ces derniers jours, beaucoup de rumeurs ont circulé dans les media. Lady Gaga par-ci, Céline Dion par-là, et… Gojira? C’est aux alentours de 20h15 (heure de Paris) qu’environ 2 milliards de téléspectateurs ont pu (re)découvrir Gojira, reprenant le chant révolutionnaire « Ah! Ça ira », introduit par une Marie-Antoinette décapitée sur les façades de la Conciergerie de Paris.
D’abord les seuls protagonistes de leur tableau faisant part du segment « Liberté » de la cérémonie des Jeux Olympiques, les Landais, qui selont l’organisation auraient mit « 5 minutes à peine pour accepter l’invitation », ont été rejoint par la chanteuse lyrique Marina Viotti pour revisiter le Carmen de Bizet.
Au-delà des flammes, des riffs et du magnifique panorama que l’on pouvait observer depuis les toits de Paris avec le personnage principal de la cérémonie, c’est une réelle performance émouvante qui nous a été offerte, symbolisant la violence ainsi que la conclusion pleine d’espoir qu’a été la Révolution Française, avec un show d’environ 3 minutes qui semble finir dans une explosion sanguine grâce à une pluie de serpentins rouges en guise de bouquet final.
