Frontman for the likes of Tool and Puscifer, Maynard Jams Keenan, is addressing his second diagnosed bout with Covid-19.
Back in October, Keenan opened up about his eight month long battle as the result of the residual effects of the virus while making an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
Revealing that he had contracted the virus in February while on tour in Australia with Tool, a misdiagnosis and a dismissal as the seasonal sniffles led to Keenan actually traveling from Australia to New Zealand while sick. The impact on Keenan led to significant pains in his hands from a severe rheumatoid response and a lingering cough as a result lung damage. From February to October, Keenan still experienced the coughing fits.
The severity of the virus prompted to Keenan to clearly address the deniers, "I’m still feeling residual effects of that. I feel like there’s a bunch of people that — maybe I didn’t almost die — I have friends who almost died. Yeah, it was close. So then you have people going... apparently I’m being paid to say this
In a recent feature with Apple Music HIts' George Stroumboulopoulos, Keenan shared that in November he again contracted the Coronavirus, prompting a visit to the emergency room on December 1st.
Keenan went into the details of his experience, “Ugly, ugly. Couldn’t breathe. I could barely put two words together without going into a coughing fit that, you know? It ended up kind of also progressing into pneumonia. So, if I stayed in the hospital, they said, ‘Okay, we can keep you here, but you’re fighting 12 other people for a bed and a ventilator we don’t have, so what do you want to do?’ I’m like, ‘Well, I need to breathe and I need to sleep.’”
In light of the chaotic situation at the hospital, Keenan opted to hunker down at home with a regimen of treatment from the doctor. “There’s nothing you can do other than treat the symptom, so for a real cough medicine, not the crap over-the-counter and then like an inhaler, and some antibiotics to fight the pneumonia and strap the fuck in.”
Despite the scary reality of 2020 for the musical, Maynard managed to successfully release new music with Puscifer as the band debuted their Existential Reckoning LP on October 30th. To celebrate the release, the band also helmed a brilliantly vivid livestream with their Live at Arcosanti event that earned commercial and critical praise.
