Nicolas Cage has a vast and varied career that's completely incomparable to any other actor's body of work. At times quiet and contemplative, at others outrageously unhinged, and others just plain bizarre, Cage has become one of the most prolific and eclectic stars in the crowded movie machine, so it makes sense why he's more or less moved away from big-budget Hollywood productions in favor of more indie cinema as of late.
That's all about to change. According the The Hollywood Reporter, Cage is set to star as none other than Count Dracula in an upcoming monster movie from Universal. Directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War), the film will be titled Renfield, after the vampire's infamous assistant. Renfield will be played by Nicholas Hoult, making this adventurous take on their tumultuous relationship a rare of case of Nicolas versus Nicholas (I must root for Nicolas).
Written by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty), it seems like the kind of role Cage was positively born for to the point where we can't believe he hasn't already done it. Alongside last year's fantastic take on The Invisible Man, Universal's attempt at reviving their classic movie monsters in fresh and exciting ways appears to be off to a great start.
