The excitement surrounding the fourth edition of The Matrix franchise hit a fever pitch on Thursday (September 9th) as Warner Bros. Pictures released the first official trailer for the return of Keanu Reeves as the iconic Thomas Anderson.
The first glimpse of the highly anticipated addition to the saga, showcases the return of Lana Wachowski who produced, co-wrote, and directed the film. The trailer was first screened at CinemaCon and was met with the kind of reception that indicated the appetite for the next installment is very real.
As for the trailer itself, the 3-minute clip is ominously set to Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and features Neo, reconnecting with Trinity (Carrie Anne Moss) whom he seems to not know. In fact, Neo seems to not have any recollection of his past at all - as evidenced by a discussion with his therapist played by Neil Patrick Harris.
Among the standouts from the first look include the Games of Thrones' star Jessica Henwick - who plays an integral role in the new clip in sporting a rabbit tattoo - a reference to the first Matrix film where Neo is instructed to “follow the white rabbit.”
The official synopsis for The Matrix Resurrections reads,
The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo and Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind."
The fourth edition of the film features the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, along with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The Matrix Resurrections arrives both in theaters and on HBO Max Dec. 22. Check the trailer below.
