The auspicious directorial debut of Darius Marder, Sound of Metal looks to be one of the most compelling releases of 2020. Best known for his work as co-writer on the 2012 Ryan Gosling film, The Place Behind the Pines, Marder's tale of self-discovery through adversity is truly unique.
Riz Ahmed plays Ruben, a recovering heroin addict that found his identity behind the drum kit. Performing with his girlfriend and bandmate Lou, played by Olivia Cooke, the pair tour the country performing on different stages nightly.
While the couple continue to hit the pavement, Ruben begins to notice he is losing his hearing. The new reality sees Ruben living in a sober home for th deaf. Ruben must not only adjust to a whole new kind of life, but also let go of the identity he felt so connected to.
