Todd Phillips shook up the world of comic book movies in 2019 with his long-awaited take on the most iconic villain in the medium: Batman's arch-nemesis The Joker. Joker acted as an origin story for the future Clown Prince of Crime; a psychological slow burn that tackled mental illness and cultural decay with a dark realism not seen in most other films based on superhero literature.
Joker's release in October of 2019 was met with widespread controversy surrounding whether the film could inspire real-life violence at screenings. Fortunately that does not seem to have been the case, as it went on to bring in a haul of over $1 billion, becoming the first ever R-rated film to achieve it. The film also received acclaim from audiences and many critics, even winning two Oscars out of numerous nominations.
After much back-and-forth, a sequel has now officially been confirmed and is already in the works. Phillips with return to both write and direct the followup alongside Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck. The film is titled Joker: Folie à Deux and while no details have been given yet as to the story, we can assume it'll follow the continued rise of Fleck's anarchic ideology in the streets of Gotham.
No release date is set yet but we do have these first images shared by Phillips on Instagram to go with the official announcement.
