Aussie metalcore standouts Heavensgate have positioned themselves on the brink.
In a relatively short span since their 2020 inception, the quick acclaim of breakout singles like "Chemical Heaven" and the band's well-received And All I Loved, I Loved Alone rightfully positioned the collective at the head of metalcore's emerging class. Fusing emotive themes with impassioned delivery, the of the band suggested that their potential had only been scratched.
On the band's latest EP, their first via Pure Noise Records, Heavensgate managed to navigate those lofty expectations while never straying from their focus and proven method of operation. Combining deft songwriting and precise execution, A Heart Is A Heavy Burden is brimming emotion and the conviction it takes to channel true catharsis.
In addition to unlocking a new level of artistry, the sonics on the EP prove progressive even among metalcore - substantiated further by subject matter that resonates as universally human. Traversing isolation, addiction, inadequacy and the duality of profound love and personal trauma, Heavensgate craft heavy music in both essence at execution.
Speaking to the gravity of the EP, vocalist Nazareth Tharatt explained how this latest presentation is most indicative of where Heavengate is as collaborative, focus, driven unit. "A HEART IS A HEAVY BURDEN really is the sum of its parts, it’s our collective experiences as band weaved into a story that is heartfelt and resonates deeply with us, which we hope in turn our listeners can appreciate. It’s always a little nerve-racking putting a body of work out there which has this much variety, but we’re proud to showcase this next step in the band."
Paired with the release of the new EP, the frontman also broke down a track-by-track examination of weighty themes that fuel such a convincing performance. Committed to cultivating new sounds with brimming with emotional honesty, Heavensgate are solidifying their place among metalcore's most promising, emerging voices.
BURDEN OF BEING
Tharatt - This track centres around feelings of inadequacy and lack of self-worth. Traversing chaotic life events can make it feel like your mental illness is a burden to the people around you. This song was meant to reflect that feeling of shame and frustration when you feel like your issues exhaust the ones you love.
OBLIVION
Tharatt - Oblivion deals with harmful emotional dynamics. It’s about remaining present in something that you know is bad for everyone involved, but you choose to seek comfort in the chaos, as it feels safer than facing the truth and trying to seek a more stable life.
RAIN
Tharatt - Rain centres around the fallout of a toxic relationship. It can feel like you still carry behaviours and thought patterns from relationships when you try to move on. Almost like a cloud that perpetually looms over you and everything you do, constantly raining down on you and reminding you of their presence and actions.
PETRICHOR
Tharatt - PETRICHOR centres around acceptance and making peace with traumatic situations. It’s hard to accept your faults and even harder to accept the faults of others, but in order to move on and grow, acknowledging and making peace with these things is the only way out.
DARLING BLUE
Tharatt - centres around the feeling of being in love. The feeling that no matter what you’ve experienced in your life or what you’ve felt and seen, you have someone who accepts you for all your faults and welcomes you with open arms, cleansing you ofall your mistakes and building you up into something new.
A FAWN FLAYED
Tharatt - A FAWN FLAYED centres around the loss of friendship through drug addiction. Witnessing the emotional and physical devolution of someone you love is a horrible thing to experience. This song is meant to convey the frustration and horror in the fact that, as much as you can extend your hand to people you love, sometimes they don’t want help and they don’t want change.
