Earlier this summer, AFI announced plans to hit the road for their first extensive headlining tour since 2021. Enlisting TR/ST for the comprehensive fall stretch, the news of the tour sparked a healthy interest in what was next musically from the noir punk veterans.
Now, the band have delivered their first offering of new music in four years with the debut of their post-punk, goth rock hybrid in "Behind the Clock." The single ushers in the band's new era on Run For Cover records and introduces their next full length album, Silver Bleeds The Black Sun... and If the introductory single offers any indication, AFI is taking their sound in a bold new direction.
“I realize this is something we’ve said about our records for years, but this record is starkly different from what we’ve done in the past,” explained frontman Davey Havok. “In our 33 years together, we’ve covered so much, musically, that I found myself daunted at the prospect of doing something different, and questioning what that would be.”
Silver Bleeds The Black Sun... was produced by the band's own Jade Puget and serves as the follow-up to AFI's universally-acclaimed 2021 LP release, Bodies.
Elaborating on the influences that steered the band stylistically into their next iteration, Puget sahred, “We started with something that sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen but eventually we ended up with this melange of death rock and post-punk—all this stuff from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that we grew up on, like Sisters of Mercy, and Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.”
Along with the October 3rd arrival of the new album from AFI, the band is set to make an appearance at Four Chord Music Festival in Washington, PA in mid-September and then their headlining dates on September 30th in Madison, WI. AFI's headlining tour wraps with a finale on November 5th in San Diego, CA. From there, the band will travel to Mexico City for a special performance on November 16th.
