Ethereal doom, rock, shoegaze hybrid Blackwater Holylight have announced their fourth full length album, Not Here Not Gone, arriving January 30th via Suicide Squeeze Records. The project proves especially significant, coinciding with the band's relocation from the familiarity of their home in Portland, OR to the new confines of Los Angeles.
In leaving behind the safety net of home, Blackwater Holylight have also been able to immerse themselves in a new environment - nurturing a renewed focus and a sense of reflection that works its way into the songs of Not Here Not Gone. Offering a glimpse into rationale that drives the album, "Heavy, Why?" showcases thought-provoking subject matter with the band's expansive sound to craft the kind of heavy mood music that make Blackwater Holylight such vital prospects.
Vocalist Sunny Faris explained of the lead single, "'Heavy, Why?' Is a lyrically light and instrumentally heavy arrangement that cryptically but intentionally speaks to the experience of being disembodied and poses the question, simply, of: 'Why? Why is it such a hard, lonely, agonizing and heavy experience to be turned away from Self.'"
As for the gravity of the album as a whole, Not Here Not Gone truly is Blackwater Holylight at their most refined. Working with Sonny Diperri at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, TX, the collection of music on the band's fourth album is the distillation of ideas that have collective have been working on since the completion of their last cycle, Silence/Motion.
“If there were to be a theme to the album, it would be patience,” says Faris. “Some of these songs we’ve been working on for three years, just giving the songs time to breath and develop while we were exploring a new place and new lives."
Along with the announcement of the band's fourth full length, Blackwater Holylight have also confirmed a healthy touring slate for the new year. Kicking things off with a U.S. trek, the run begins February 13th in San Diego, CA the run extends some 26-stops across the country before circling back to Los Angeles. From there, Blackwater Holylight will travel abroad, performing Not Here Not Gone in full at Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands in addition to a slew of headlining dates and festival appearances including Desertfest in London and Sonic Rites Fest in Helsinki, Finland.
