Working at the kind of prolific pace that matches their performative power, Converge are set to deliver their second full length studio album in the same first half of the year next month. Following the release of the acclaimed Love Is Not Enough earlier this year, Hum of Hurt serves as a second, autonomous presentation, that again emphasizes the intensity and technicality that have defined the band's illustrious career.
Introducing the album last month with the reveal of the title track, Hum of Hurt frames the real-life phenomenon of a persistent, low-frequency noise registering between 30 and 40 hertz that has been heard in different locations across the globe. Scientists have referred to the unexplained occurrence as The Hum, but Converge to the of something metaphysical and built from that.
“What if 'The Hum' is the culmination of all the pain in the world, creating an audible signal across the universe?” frontman Jacob Bannon explained. “Something noticeable to others operating on a similar emotional plane.”
For the second and most recent preview of the album, Converge have shared a visceral, metallic exorcise with "Doom in Bloom." Anchored by Kurt Ballou's aggressive urgent guitars and Bannon's vocal spew, the track is cathartic and confrontational in only the way Converge can be.
Bannon shared, “It’s dark and pointed right at you,” he says. “Lyrically, I’m exploring how my own middle-aged introspection doesn’t always bring a brighter light. I see my own trappings reflected in those around me. Here I am imploring them to slip the noose to see another day.”
Converge are currently on tour in support of Love Is Not Enough. The band has several dates with Poison the Well and will continue overseas this summer for a slate of European festival dates including appearances at Outbreak Festival and Resurrection Festival among many others.
