Just weeks after revealing he had been battling Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a form of oral cancer, since December 2023, legendary At the Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg has died. The statement was published last month and offered an update as to why the band had been silent for an extended stretch. 

The health update from Lindberg explained that after a 2024 that included aggressive surgery and two months worth of subsequent radiation therapy, doctors had discovered that the cancer still remained as of the beginning of this year. Uncertain of the next steps, Lindberg also confirmed that he had recorded vocals for a new At the Gates record, prior to the start of his extended health ordeal. 

"Luckily, we recorded vocals for the demos for the new album before all of this happened. The last version of the vocals, the ones that will end up on the album, were recorded in ONE day, mostly one takes, the DAY before the surgery, just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak. So the vocals were actually recorded BEFORE the rest of the album.... a bit different, but it felt good to have it done.

We have now decided to not wait any longer to release this new album. We had first planned to wait with the release until we knew if/when I would be able to sing again, and we were able to support the release with shows.

Now when everything about the future is a bit more unsure it feels good to deliver this album. It is an album that we all are very proud of, and it's the first time in 10 years that Jonas and I have worked together with Anders writing an albums’ worth of music.
It is a bit more of a return to the "roots", probably best described as a mix between the two last albums we did with Anders - Slaughter of the Soul and At War with Reality.

Lindberg would go onto end his message urging fans to take care of one another and to value their time. "I hope you all are well. Take care of yourself, your loved ones and the time you have on this earth."

Lindberg's lasting legacy with At the Gates is one that influences even the current landscape of heavy music. Widely regarded as a pioneering voice in melodic metal and true ambassador of the Gothenburg signature. Outside of At the Gates, Lindberg worked with bands like Disfear, Lock Up and The Crown just to list a few. Among his most celebrated and enduring entries however, 1995's Slaughter of the Soul is regarded as the archetype of melodic death metal and a record that further solidified the Swedish sound. 

The remaining members of At the Gates released a statement in the wake of the tragic loss. The band shared, "Tomas - You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit.
