MANDATORY JAMS: New Heat for the Week 9/13

- By Ramon Gonzales

This week's shortlist features heavy new slabs on deck from established veterans like August Burns Red and Whitechapel along with fresh blood like Obeyer and Dormant making their mark.

AUGUST BURNS RED - "EXHUMED" (ABR Records)

Metalcore OGs August Burns Red goes scorched earth on their latest single. The first reveal of new tunes since the band's hulking 2023 LP, Death Below, ABR showcases explosiveness in the form of hostile vocals from Jake Luhrs, big guitars from JB Brubaker and one helluva breakdown guaranteed to level rooms live.

UNTIL I WAKE - "THE REVERENCE" (Fearless Records)

The Buffalo prospects succeeded in delivering arguably their heaviest work to date. Enoisting Landon Tewers of The Plot In You to record and produce the track, double drums, brawny guitarist along with guttural vocals and stylized glitch make for a track that hits with devastating intentions.

WHITECHAPEL - "A VISCERAL RETCH" (Metal Blade Records)

Deathcore OGs Whitechapel have unveiled their first showing of new music since their hailed 2021 LP, Kin. The band's latest standalone single in "A Visceral Retch”, showcases all of the intensity and brutality that have become the hallmark of the band. Maybe not intentional, the single serves as a powerful reminder how just how steeped the band are among the ranks of deathcore, asserting a track that harkens back to their earliest entries beloved for their unrelenting brutality. A solid return to form...

DORMANT - "FRACTURED MEMORIES"

Comprised of members of Blood Youth, Red Method, Profiler, Sunfall, and Creak, ascending prospects Dormant combine the aggressive aspects of EDM, the pageantry of cinematic soundscapes and industrial tinged metal for a final product that mows over everything in its path. What is even more promising is that "Fractured Memories" is only the second single ever released from the project and already... This.

OBEYER - "SECOND SUN" (3Dot Recordings)

Cinematic prog practitioners Obeyer have earned the cosign of Misha Mansoor such that the band score a deal on his 3Dot label with a glowing endorsement. Given the band's knack for well-executed heft in the form of meaty guitars, hostile vocals and thunderous percussion - it's no surprise why the prospects come on so highly touted. For their introduction as the latest on the label's roster, "Second Sun" offers tip of the hat to bands like Meshuggah, Opeth and Animals As Leaders while injecting new blood among the genre's savvy vets.
