Mental Cruelty Pair Brutality and Scandinavian Mythology on "The Serpent of Midgard"

- By Ramon Gonzales -->

The German deathcore progressive begin a European headlining run this November with Ov Sulfur, Extermination Dismemberment, Acranius and Sun Eater.

Continuing the band exploratory delve into Norse mythology, Mental Cruelty have followed last year's Helheim” with the equally epic, "The Serpent of Midgard." Expanding on the narrative of Loki’s second child, Jörmungandr, and his legendary final battle with Thor, the track is a daring, damning show of melodeath that underscores the evolution of the German collective.

The band shared of the single, "Musically, we wanted to capture the intensity of the conflict, with our guitarist Nahuel Lozano’s working title of ‘Gojibehe’ summing up key influences. You can guess those, but we’ll spell out the inspiration behind the chunky mid-section and the closest thing we get to a full-on breakdown here: our brothers Signs of the Swarm and the insane tones on their latest album!"

The band also talked about the hurdles they faced in completing their vision with the production of the epic music video. "But while we learned from bands we look up to and friends alike musically, sadly, we never learn from ourselves and once again shot the music video in subzero temperatures. The results are worth it—you can see for yourself—but damn, that was cold.”

Adding to what has already been an extensive touring slate in 2026, Mental Cruelty will embark on a European trek to close out the year this November. Along with support from Ov Sulfur, Extermination Dismemberment, Acranius and Sun Eater, the trek begins November 27th in Rotterdam and concludes in Karlsruhe on December 20th. A list of dates and cities can be found below.
