New Flesh 6/9: Releases From Godflesh, Scar Symmetry & More!

- By Corinne Westbrook

From grindcore punk to pulsating industrial to atmospheric black metal, columnist Cori Westbrook runs down this week's fresh cuts.

Aodon – Portraits - Atmospheric Black Metal

There are very few things certain in life, but one thing you can always count on is a release from Willowtip Records being stunning. An interesting take on the idea of a concept album, portraits centers around the rise and fall of 9 individuals, each song representing a different story. While the album is blistering in nature, the band doesn’t shy away from melody, atmosphere, or the occasional shoe-gaze moment.

Cancer Christ – Satan Is A Bitch - Grindcore/punk

Cancer Christ is a Reptilian-Christian-Christ-Violence grindcore/punk outfit and their most recent opus of grotesque gospel spews sonic shrapnel for the masses. Blood bath baptisms, and hardcore punk beats abound on this affront to organized religion. The perfect satirical antidote to a world gone awry, Cancer Christ is an absolute blast.

Godflesh – Purge - Industrial

Industrial metal pioneers Godflesh have released one of their most robust albums to date. Many bands with careers that span decades either grow complacent or distracted as time goes on. Godflesh is more focused than ever on Purge, the sister album to 1992’s Pure. They bring the concepts explored on Pure into 2023 and have crafted an incredibly thought-provoking release. It’s time to get lost.

Gravecrawler – The Horrors Unleashed - Blackened Death Metal

It’s time to get your stank faces out because this is NASTY! Gravecrawler unleash a blood-soaked barrage of technical carnage and snarling vocals. Chunky guitar riffs, blast beats and a battering ram of bass lines make this album one to throw down to.

Legion Of The Damned – The Poison Chalice - Blackened Thrash

Poison Chalice is rife with sinister vocals, rapid-fire riffing and pummeling drums. Their carefully honed amalgam of thrash, death and black metal is recognizable for long-time fans, while the album offers up additional layers for something intriguing. Unrelenting riffs pair with intricate guitar melodies for an infectious listen.

Scar Symmetry – The Singularity (Phase II – Xenotaph) - Melodic Death Metal

Wrapping up this week we have the long-awaited follow up to 2014’s The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity). Balancing aggressive, harmonious and theatrical, Scar Symmetry’s The Singularity (Phase II – Xenotaph) packs an epic punch. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 9 years for part III.

Slipknot - Adderall EP

SURPRISE! It’s been a whirlwind of a week from the masked maestros in Slipknot. The unexpected six track EP features both new songs and interpretations of the song "Adderall" from The End, So Far. What is to come next? "Deconstructing to continuously pave the way for evolution," Slipknot’s Clown mysteriously posits. "At this point in the program nothing is safe."
