Ash Avildsen, the man behind ‘American Satan’ and ‘Paradise City’ directs the upcoming film based on the triumphant story of Mildred Burke and her journey from small-town single mother to the world's first million dollar female athlete.

Sumerian Pictures has officially unveiled Queen of the Ring, the inspiring true story of wrestling pioneer Mildred Burke, in theaters on March 7, 2025. Written and directed by Ash Avildsen (American Satan, Paradise City) the film celebrates one of sports history’s most groundbreaking figures.

Based on the book of the same name, Queen of the Ring chronicles Burke’s journey from small-town single mother to the first million-dollar female athlete. During an era when women’s wrestling was banned across the United States, Burke defied societal norms to become a champion, headlining arenas and paving the way for future generations.

Emily Bett Rickards (Arrow) makes her big-screen debut as Burke, earning early acclaim for her powerful portrayal of the trailblazing wrestler. The cast also features Josh Lucas (Ford v Ferrari), Walton Goggins (Fallout), Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil), and professional wrestlers Kamille, Toni Storm, and Trinity Fatu, bridging the gap between the film’s narrative and real-world wrestling.

Ash Avildsen’s personal connection to storytelling drives the project. The son of legendary director John G. Avildsen (Rocky, The Karate Kid), Ash only met his father as an adult—a life-changing experience that deeply influenced his work. Reflecting on the film, Avildsen said:

“Queen of the Ring is the culmination of my personal and professional journey. It’s about perseverance, identity, and defying limitations—both societal and personal. Reconnecting with my father gave me the purpose I needed to tell this story.”

Releasing during Women’s History Month and just before International Women’s Day, the film honors Burke’s trailblazing legacy. The trailer, featuring a cinematic rendition of Des Rocs’ “Never Ending Moment,” showcases the film’s blend of grit and spectacle.

With rave reviews from festivals—The Hollywood Reporter calls it “making all the right moves,” while MovieJawn praises its “glitzy, gritty Americana”—Queen of the Ring is poised to captivate audiences with its authentic and heartfelt storytelling.

Mark your calendar for March 7, 2025, as Queen of the Ring hits theaters to celebrate one of wrestling’s most inspiring and influential figures.
