Set to deliver their landmark thirteenth full length studio album next month, Chama, Brazilian metal pillars Soulfly have followed the recent introductory single, "Storm the Gates" with an elite level collaboration.
Enlisting Todd Jones of extreme metal unit NAILS, "Nihilist" serves as the second preview from the forthcoming album and a powerful statement of Soulfly's progression in the modern era. Underscoring the continued evolution of producer Zyon Cavalera along with the Midas Touch of Arthur Rizk, the track is a walloping assertion of the Cavalera brand - brutal and bold as ever.
Paired with a sleek new visual directed by Costin Chioreanu, "Nihilist" marks an impressive return to form for Soulfly, embracing their tribal DNA while confidently pressing forward as modernists in metal.
Frontman and icon Max Cavalera explained how the greats of heavy music still serve as a vital muse to him after all these years. “My lyrics are inspired by LG of Entombed and Nihilist. He left this earth in 2021 and he was always a big influence on me. This is one of the heaviest songs on the record and I love the fact that we went to Bulgaria to make the video. Todd Jones is the special guest on the song, delivering the hardest line on the record. ‘I don’t believe in anything!’”
Speaking to the ethos of the record, Max Cavalera explained what is in a name and why this album is about transforming the band's creative spark into somehting more. "'Chama' is the Brazilian word for flame. It also means a 'calling'. Respect to Alex Pereira for using Itsari on his UFC walkouts. Chama is inspired by the energy of this moment. This record is the sound of Soulfly’s fire! I cannot wait to play these songs live for the Tribe! Chama!"
Drummer and producer Zyon Cavalera discussed his perspective on the project and reflected on his evolving role within the band. “With each Soulfly record I’ve played on, I can feel my evolution happening in real time. This record was no different as I got to handle a good amount of the production for the first time. Trying to take the band to places we have never been before was a blast and I look forward to more production work in the future!”
