Capping what has been a career year for Sydney's purveyors of Aussie hardcore, SPEED. have expanded to the their Only One Mode cycle, with the launch of a brand new three-song EP, All My Angels. Bolstering a year-to-date run that has seen coveted support tour tuns, sold out headlining appearances and major festival plays including a highlight set at this year's Coachella, SPEED continues to dominate the pack.
Leveraging the band's relentless live schedule, SPEED has seized the opportunity to launch new music - the first since last year's victorious LP via Flatspot Records. Amid the important victories the band have tallied in recent years, All My Angels deals with the significant loss the collective has endured simultaneously. Navigating incredible highs and devastating lows, the EP showcases SPEED as it's most reflective, navigating through grief while expressing the gratitude for those in their universe.
Vocalist Jem Siow previously detailed the gravity of the project, “Three of our close friends passed away in 18 months - but, amidst this devastation I was overcome with a deep sense of clarity and peace. Because, despite the abyss of questions of why and how, my clearest sense of calm lay in the certainty that the time we shared and invested in one another was underpinned by unfiltered honesty and unconditional love.
Their lives were short, but I know our experiences together were lived with deep, meaningful intention, which has in turn empowered us with more meaning and purpose while we are still here. This sense of calm and focus exists like a sharpened, refined weapon at my disposal - poised to attack life and its many hurdles with precision and intention. And it has only been refined through the process of loss.”
Marking the arrival of the EP, SPEED has issued the emotive title track, further emphasizing how grief and trauma have only served to galvanize the Sydney sensation. Asserting the band's signature sound, SPEED's sonics prove especially powerful when. paired with a genuine sense of purpose. Life is hard, SPEED is harder. Jem Siow adds how the human experience, in its entirety, remains at the core of this EP.
“In death I have found greater peace in realising the essence of life and the things that truly matter during our time on earth. Love, connection, the multitude of human experiences (good, bad and between), memories and gratitude. There is a deep sense of empowerment found in honouring our lost ones - pursuing their character, exporting their qualities in their absence, completing their missions - even as a way of bringing meaning to their departure.
The hurt we feel is magnified due to the significance and intensity of the connection shared. But with that comes deep gratitude for the experiences and miracles that brought us together. In living with gratitude and a consciousness of all our blessings, there is no regret.
I am eternally grateful for this life in its entirety. The human experience involves enduring, cherishing and evolving through the multiplicity of feelings and situations we are faced with. I will never understand how one can succumb to their own despair but I will aspire to absorb every moment of this life ten fold in their place, while I am here to do so.”
