Jersey brutalizers Cognitive have paid respect to their influences with an ambitious take on one of metal's most anthemic entries. Reaching back to 2001, the tech death unit have delivered a tried and true rendition of Slipknot's "People = Shit" from the watershed sophomore full length, Iowa.
The cover lands as the band begin The Underworld Awaits US tour supporting the likes of Nile, Cryptopsy and The Last Ten Seconds of Life. Hitting the road in support of their 2024 LP, Abhorrence, the Metal Blade Records release was hailed as a havy music hybrid, sourcing elements from death, tech and grind offering a promising example of extreme music's new school.
Issuing the standalone tribute to Slipknot, the band offered some insight into the decision to record such a generational staple and explained that the track is intended to tide fans over until the next chapter from the band is fully prepped.
"Here we go again mother fuckers! We have been hard at work writing our next album and prepping for tour but decided to spend some time having fun and recorded a cover of 'People = Shit' by the almighty Slipknot! We wanted to have fun with something that wasn't exactly death metal, but still in the extreme realm! The world is an awful place, and humanity doesn't make it any better, so to us the Slipknot math and song title added up correctly! We hope you enjoy and see you on the road with Nile, Cryptopsy, and The Last Ten Seconds Of Life."
The Underworld Awaits USA tour is currently underway. A current list of dates and cities can be found below.
