Filmmaker Coan Buddy Nichols has released an important 20-minute short film in partnership with punk advocates Trust Records and skate authority VANS. Intense Energy: Sounds Of Skateboarding, takes an anthropological approach in examining the intersection of underground music and skateboarding culture.
Compiling interview footage with a generational delegation of skateboarding icons, gamechangers like Steve Olson, Tony Alva, Steve Caballero, Mike Carroll, Eli Morgan Gesner, Beatrice Domond and Atiba Jefferson offer their personal account of self-discovery that made skate and music synonymous.
Coupled with archived footage and photos, Nichols also conducts in-depth conversations with music legends including Henry Rollins, Zack de la Rocha, Jeff Ament and Ian MacKaye to better frame how punk ethos, creative rebellion and the DIY resourcefulness of skateboarding converged to galvanize community and culture.
The film is currently available online and can be viewed in its entirety below.
To celebrate the release, Trust Records and VANS will host an exclusive screening and live performance at VANS Skate Space in Brooklyn, NY on Friday, November 21st. The event will feature live sets from Somerset Thrower, SPIN and DJ Marc Sinclair in addition to the short film screening. Fans are able to RSVP - HERE
