Accomplished artist, generational talent and cinematic gamechanger David Lynch has reportedly passed away at the age of 78. In 2024, it was announced that the director of such beloved films as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive had been diagnosed with emphysema. The news would ultimately sideline any future project as Lynch would no longer be able to leave his home to work.
In a statement published by Lynch's family, the news of his passing was coupled with a reminder to find the silver lining - a perspective the family reminded fans that Lynch would have encouraged.
"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'
It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way."

Among the myriad of accolades Lynch tallied during his career, his filmography is among the most influential and enduring, dating back nearly five decades. His debut feature film, Eraserhead, remains a definitive entry establishing Lynch's penchant for film noir with subversive surrealist body horror. Among his most beloved works include The Elephant Man (1980), the psychological thriller Blue Velvet (1986) and the 2001 masterclass Mulholland Drive (2001). Each of the previously listed films would garner Lynch an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
Lynch's artistic prowess was unbound. He was first trained as a painter which included a brief stay at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and was an alum of The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He would continue to paint throughout his career as a filmmaker. Lynch was also a sound designer and musician who collaborated with a lengthy roster of artists. Among his notable submissions include his work with Trent Reznor to create original compositions for the 1997 thrill, Lost Highway.
Lynch would release several records including his own compositions ranging from electopop to ambient. Lynch's list of collaborators included the likes of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lykke Li, Flying Lotus, Interpol and many more.
In his storied career, arguably Lynch's biggest impact was his indelible mark left on the landscape of American television. Lynch's supernatural murder mystery set in the Pacific Northwest only ran for two seasons between 1990 and 1991, yet remains one of television's most acclaimed series. Enjoying a cult-like following and generational shelf-life, the series would go onto shape Lynch's directorial signature with shades of the show colored into films like 2006's Inland Empire and the previously mentioned Lost Highway. The popularity of the series even segued into a 1992 feature length prequel in Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
Lynch was just 78 years old and will forever be remembered for his lasting contributions to the silver screen and beyond.
