A decade ago director Jason Georgiades set out to examine the outset of an important subgenre of heavy music in desert rock. Anchored by the reach and influence of bands like Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, Eagles of Death Metal and more. Georgiades' subsequent documentary, Desert Age: A Rock and Roll Scene History brought together some of the genre's most recognizable names to better frame the landscape that nurtured the scene and sound.
Featuring testimonial interviews with the likes of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri, Jesse Hughes, Mario Lalli and more, the film leverages archved images and uncovered live footage from the era of "Generator Parties" in the middle the California desert that eventually gave rise to the distinct brand of Desert Rock.
Set for a 10th Anniversary Special Edition re-release next month, a new, extended clip featuring Josh Homme and Mario Lalli discussing the music and Kyuss’ formative sound has surfaced. Along with footage of an early Kyuss performance, the clip emphasizes the history of the SoCal subset and enduring relevancde decades later.
“This was a passion project from the beginning,” explained director Jason Georgiades. “I was working at Vice and on the weekends, I would head to the desert, researching everything I could about not just the music, which I already was a fan of, but of the history of the area, what brought that specific, now unmistakable heaviness, to the bands that came out of the Coachella Valley. Mario Lalli and so many other people embraced my desire to share the incredible story behind these bands, bands like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, and the musicians that came before them.”
In addition to the wide re-release of the film on November 20th, there will be a 10th anniversary screening event on November 7 at Festival Theaters in Palm Springs, CA. The screening will also include a Q&A hosted by Natasha Berenek. Special guests participating in the discussion will include Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri, Sean Wheeler, Sophia Possidon, director Jason Georgiades, and producer Trevar Cushing.
