Among the UK's most proven names in contemporary metal, While She Sleeps continue to cement their legacy as a band reborn with the true spirit of DIY. Set to launch their sixth studio album Mafrch 29th, Self Hell, showcases the creative fervor of a band fully invested in themselves.
Along with production from Sean Long and long-term collaborator Carl Bown, the LP asserts a new artistic plateau for the band - merging a variety of influences into a presentation that hits hard both sonically and thematically. Having already shared the album's title track and the clobbering cut, "Down" featuring Alex Taylor of Malevolence - excitement for the band's latest iteration is at an all time high.
Emphasizing the band's complete understanding of presentation, the latest offering from Self Hell comes in the form of the poignant track, "To the Flowers". Asserting big melody, hefty guitars and the kind of powerhouse performance that punctuates an album, the track also offers therapeutic value for the members themselves.
Guitarist Sean Long explained, “This song means a lot to us. As much as we love a good breakdown and heavy riff, a lot of our passion lies within emotive musical pieces. This song has nearly brought us all to tears multiple times simply because it touches something in us that we hold very dear. A pain we all know and have felt down to our deepest core. The essence of our personal pain expressed in music is what the band is all about. Talking about the things we know are difficult but necessary."
Long continued, "The working title was called 'radiohead' and that should help to understand the feeling it gave us when writing it. This contains the 'double whammy' that I stumbled across just before the song was finished. It went insanely viral when I posted it online so I just had to get it in the song. People have been saying it’s one of the greatest lead guitar parts of all time, I’ll take it."
Underscoring the emotive weight of the track, While She Sleeps has released a self-directed cinematic visual for the single that translates like a indie film more than a music video. Featuring stunning cinematography, brilliant editing and a powerful message, the full scope of the single suggest Self Hell is While She Sleeps at their finest.
Vocalist Loz Taylor shared of the release, “‘To The Flowers’ is emotional, tragic, and real life. We intended to make a short film that encompasses the real emotions of relationships, grief, love, death, and pain. Shot by the members of While She Sleeps, ‘To The Flowers’ ebbs and flows through an entendre of tragedy. This was a huge project to undertake, and we have poured our creative energy into directing this piece. We had a wicked time working on the film. This will hit home.”
While She Sleeps have also recently been confirmed for a North American trek supporting Architects set for spring of 2024 along with Of Mice & Men. See the complete list of dates and cities below.
