Band architect Nathan Weaver illuminated the thematic scope of the album, "Our new LP 'Estuary' is set 1000 years in the future after the end of civilization. Survivors of a cataclysm wander the haunted ruins. It is a world of mutant creatures and open portals. Post-apocalyptic religion takes form in a wild landscape.”
An expansive combination of dreariness and beauty, the album's fusion of harsh tones, punishing percussion, epic guitars and layered atmospherics make for an immersive soundtrack that challenges the conventions of modern black metal.
Weaver explained how the themes of the album translate musically, bridging the vastness of nature with bleakness of the man-made world. “If wilderness overcame the cities in the future, the estuaries would be realms of power and magic.
