Trekking in support of their triumphant sophomore album which landed late last year, Twin Temple have run with the gospel of 'God Is Dead' in way that takes blasphemy to raucous, celebratory levels.
Along with noir pop outliers VOWWS, the tandem of Alexandra and Zachary James put on a masterclass of vintage r&b, soul, doo-wop, executed with rock n roll fervor for the North Carolina stop of their God Is Dead tour. Showcasing selections from the latest album, opening with the alluring "Sex Magick" and channeling the spirit of The Chiffons and the Shangri-Las on the liberating "Burn Your Bible", Twin Temple wasted little time in setting a precedent for the evening.
Combining the band's timeless songwriting with a idealogical emphasis rooted in individuality, sexual freedom and empowerment, Twin Temple's satanist lean is less for shock value and more about personal deliverance - revelation without the threat of eternal damnation. And even if you are going to hell, at the very least the party will be much better there.
Otherwise inflammatory tracks like "Be A Slut" and "Let's Have a Satanic Orgy" translate as pure exaltation, sourcing a sound reminiscent of the golden era of rhythm and blues while advocating for a unique kind of self-discovery. Twin Temple's ability to stylize the subversive with such authenticity is what continues to propel their upward trajectory - they make the fiendish, fun.
Further asserting their pedigree, Alexandra and Zach even included a cover of film and television staple, covering Jack Marshall and the iconic theme from The Munsters, much to the adulation of the pack-tight crowd on a Friday night in North Carolina.
Ending with their emphatic title track, "God Is Dead" Twin Temple take such a divisive declaration and manage to galvanize the audience with the entry that resonates as joyous - if not only for it's classic composition, but also for it's message of personal salvation without the looming threat of pissing off the big man upstairs.
Twin Temple live offers credence to the notion that the weather might be better in heaven, but the company and soundtrack, sure is better below.
