Screen Crusades: Weekly Streaming Guide 10.7.22

The new Hellraiser is unlocked on Hulu, Marvel unleashes their resident werewolf on Disney+ and much more this week


‘Hellraiser’ (Hulu)

In this new adaptation of the Clive Barker cult classic, a young woman named Riley (Odessa A’zion) struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension. Jamie Clayton will be taking over the iconic role of Pinhead.

‘Werewolf by Night’ (Disney+)

On a dark and sombre night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader; the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic. This spooky Marvel special is directed by none other than famous composer Michael Giacchino.

‘Deadstream’ (Shudder)

A disgraced Internet personality (Joseph Winter) attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.

‘Mr. Harrigan’s Phone’ (Netflix)

This latest adaptation of a Stephen King story is based on “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone”, a novella from his 2020 If It Bleeds collection. A boy (Jaeden Martell, star of 2017’s It) and an aging billionaire (Donald Sutherland) bond over books — and their first iPhones. But when the older man passes, their mysterious connection refuses to die.

‘The Midnight Club’ (Netflix)

From acclaimed modern master of horror Mike Flanagan, The Midnight Club follows a group of five terminally ill patients at Brightcliffe Hospice, who begin to gather together at midnight to share scary stories. The group forms a pact, that whoever dies first would make the effort to contact the rest of the Midnight Club members from beyond the grave.

‘Significant Other’ (Paramount+)

This mystery thriller follows a young couple (Maika Monroe & Jake Lacy) who take a remote backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest and face sinister events leading them to realize that everything about the place is not as it seems.

‘Old People’ (Netflix)

In this slice of geriatric horror, a woman travels home with her two kids for her sister's wedding but finds herself defending her family against blood-seeking pensioners.

‘Luckiest Girl Alive’ (Netflix)

Mila Kunis plays a Sharp-Tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon. But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Brentley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life.

‘Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler (Season 3)’ (HBO Max)

Former British SAS soldier Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) forms a security company and goes to work with Bruce Wayne's billionaire father, Thomas (Ben Aldridge), in 1960s London. Season three begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse—ushering in a new age of superheroes and supervillains.

‘Derry Girls (Season 3)’ (Netflix)

Derry Girls is the creation of the acclaimed writer, Lisa McGee, who has mined her own experiences to create a candid, one-of-a-kind, family-centred comedy which takes a warm and hilarious look at the everyday lives of ordinary people living in extraordinary times. The final season of the hit Irish series is now finally on Netflix.


‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ (Disney+)

Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) becomes the powerful She-Hulk after a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). Walters struggles to juggle her career as a lawyer – specifically one who specializes in superhero-related cases – with her recent big and green transformations, as well as a romantic life. Jameela Jamil also stars in the series as Titania, a rival for Walters, and Tim Roth will be reprising his role as Emil Blonsky AKA The Abomination from the original The Incredible Hulk. The first eight episodes are now streaming with the finale arriving next week.

‘Bad Sisters’ (Apple TV+)

A delicious blend of both dark comedy and thriller, “Bad Sisters” follows the lives of the Garvey sisters, who are bound together by the premature death of their parents and a promise to always protect one another. The first nine episodes are now streaming with the finale arriving next week.

‘House of the Dragon’ (HBO Max)

The reign of House Targaryen begins: House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is here. Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. The first seven episodes are now streaming.

‘Little Demon’ (Hulu)

In FX’s Little Demon, an animated comedy featuring the voices of Danny DeVito and Aubrey Plaza, it has been 13 years since being impregnated by Satan, and a reluctant mother, Laura, and her Antichrist daughter, Chrissy, attempt to live an ordinary life in Delaware. However, the two are constantly thwarted by monstrous forces, including Satan, who yearns for custody of his daughter’s soul. The first eight episodes are now streaming.

‘See (Season 3)’ (Apple TV+)

In the final chapter of this epic series, the stakes have never been higher for Baba Voss (Jason Momoa) and his tribe, as a new form of warfare threatens to destroy the world as they know it. The first seven episodes are now streaming with the finale arriving next week.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ (Amazon Prime Video)

The biggest and most expensive television series in history has now begun streaming exclusively on Prime Video and looks to introduce a new generation to Middle Earth. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
