The 'Saw' Franchise Returns in 2023 With a Tenth Movie

Director Kevin Greutert is also returning to the franchise with some brand new traps

Saw is one of if not the most important horror franchise of the 2000s, dominating the Halloween box office every year from 2004 to 2010. Created by James Wan and Leigh Whanell, both of whom have gone on to become iconic filmmakers in their own rights, the Saw movies follow the exploits of a serial killer named Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) and his various accomplices as he forces victims into sadistic games where they must fight to survive. They’re placed into elaborate traps that physically and psychologically torture them until they free themselves or die. Not many make it out in one piece.

The increasingly convoluted main storyline ended with Saw 3D AKA The Final Chapter, and a 2017 reboot titled Jigsaw failed to generate much buzz. However, the franchise came back in a big way just last year with Spiral, a reboot starring Chris Rock that stuck to the basics with newfound energy and a refreshing sense of humor. Directed by Darren Lyn Bousman, who previously made the second, third and fourth films, Spiral widened the scope of the franchise, making it feel bigger than ever before and breathed new life into a series that felt like it was overdue for it. There’s obviously plenty that Saw still wants to do, and Spiral was an excellent kick off point.

Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have now officially announced the anticipated followup is coming just in time for Halloween next year. The tenth Saw film is set for an October 27th 2023 release date and will be directed by Kevin Greutert. Greutert is no stranger to the franchise, in fact, he's a longtime veteran. Both Saw VI and The Final Chapter were directed by him, having previously edited the first four films and returning to edit Jigsaw in 2017.

No plot or character details have been revealed yet, and it's unclear whether Chris Rock or others will be returning in any capacity this time around. Here's hoping that the tenth film in this wickedly beloved horror series manages to keep things going in an inspired and entertaining way.
