The stunning video serves as the first serving from the forthcoming Napalm Records EP set to debut April 23rd.
The title track and official music video for Bodom After Midnight’s Paint the Sky with Blood EP has arrived and both the audio and visual are brilliant testament to the life, legacy, and unmissable talent of the band’s departed architect, Alexi Laiho.
The project was initially intended to mark the beginning of a new era for Laiho, and his creative counterparts in guitarist Daniel Freyberg, Waltteri Väyrynen (Paradise Lost), Mitja Toivonen and keyboardist Vili Itäpelto. Transitioning from the Children of Bodom chapter into Bodom After Midnight, the band’s EP was intended to serve as an introductory work that would usher in a supporting tour, a new full length record, and the continued march of one of metal’s most prolific players in Laiho – yet tragically those plans have since changed.
Late 2020, the metal world received the news that Alexi Laiho had passed away. He was just 41 years young. The significant loss segued into the bittersweet reality that he had finished three last songs with Bodom After Midnight that the world needed to experience. The band commented on the how the significance of this EP has shifted in the wake of Laiho’s passing. “Like ourselves, Alexi was beyond stoked about these songs and anxious to get these out, so we are happy that we can fulfill his wish. Needless to say, we are honored and proud to be a part of his very last creative work and to unleash it the way he wanted it. It’s time to let the beast out of the cage one more time as a celebration of Alexi’s music, legacy and the man himself.”
The three track effort truly showcases how formidable a talent Laiho was. From the title track, to the emphatic “Payback’s A Bitch,” to the colossal cover of Dissection’s “Where Dead Angels Lie,” Bodom After Midnight first three tracks were never intended to be a swan song but rather a mission statement. Their brand was domination, a full scale instrumental assault that was sure to strike a match in the universe of metal. Now, the EP serves as a fitting punctuation of Laiho’s lasting impact and musical influence that will remain with fans for generations to come.
