‘Scream’ Returns to the Big Screen With First Poster For Fifth Film

The new movie will be the first since Wes Craven’s passing

Wes Craven’s Scream franchise breathed new life into the increasingly stale horror genre at the end of the 90s with its smart story and sharp sense of humor. The film completely changed slashers for the better as well, playing on their many cliches and forcing a sense of self-awareness for all future movies of the kind. Literally any and all slashers since the first Scream in 1996 owe it a debt.

The initial trilogy ended in 2000 before Craven returned with a fourth installment in 2011. Scream 4, along with a three season television series, revitalized the franchise and helped usher in a new wave of horror once again. Tragically, Craven passed away in 2015, leaving the upcoming fifth film – simply titled Scream – the very first to not be directed by the iconic filmmaker.

Thankfully, things appear to be in good hands. The new film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Bettinelli-Olpin, Gillet, and Vanderbilt are riding high off of 2019’s excellent Ready or Not, one of the best horror flicks of that year. The former two are also known for their contributions to the V/H/S franchise and the films Devil’s Due and Southbound.

Scream will be a direct sequel to the fourth film and due to over a decade having passed since then, it also serves a soft reboot. David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Roger L. Jackson, and Marley Shelton are all returning to reprise their original roles, but beyond that not much is known as far as the plot goes. The film will also have a new composer, Brian Tyler, who has done scores for various franchises like Fast and the Furious, The Expendables, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Paramount has released the first official poster for the film, with the ominous tagline “It’s always someone you know”. A trailer is very likely to drop this week, most likely in conjunction with the release of Halloween Kills.

‘Scream’ will be unleashed in theaters January 14th 2022.
