The visionary behind The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor unveils his next terrifying series for Netflix
Mike Flanagan is a modern staple of the horror scene. In addition to his smash hit twin series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor – two equally beautiful and horrifying tales of love and despair – the filmmaker also proved to be one of the very best interpreters of the work of Stephen King, having written and directed brilliant film adaptations of Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, as well as an original talent in his own right with films like Oculus, Hush, and Before I Wake.
Flanagan has seen his most success with streaming service giant Netflix and has since struck a deal with them that includes a brand new original horror series from the filmmaker titled Midnight Mass as well as an adaptations of various Christopher Pike novels in a project called The Midnight Club.
The first full-length trailer for Midnight Mass was just released to widespread excitement, as it seems evident that Flanagan’s gift for paralyzing supernatural terrors mixed with emotional storytelling is stronger than it’s ever been.
The official description reads: “Midnight Mass tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater). When Father Paul’s appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community – but do these miracles come at a price?”
The series, which also stars Kate Siegel, Annabeth Gish, Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, and Henry Thomas, was filmed in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and looks to both solidify Flanagan as the current king of horror television as well as evolve his career to the next level. Check out the trailer below.
‘Midnight Mass‘ arrives on Netflix September 24th.
