In the wake of the pandemic and cancelled touring plans, the AZ antagonists offer a unique doubled sided effort that showcases influences ranging from grind, doom, hardcore, and black metal.

With zero rollout, death metal prospects Gatecreeper have suddenly emerged with a brand new studio effort in An Unexpected Reality. The studio release arrives on January 13th via Closed Casket Activities.

In the wake of cancelled touring plans and a catastrophic 2020, the band opted to pursue a creative effort in a dual sided release that brings together a myriad of styles – a release that has long been something that frontman Chase Mason has had in mind.

“I’ve had the idea to do a record like this for a while,” Mason offers. “In 2020, we were supposed to be touring all year. Once everything got cancelled, we decided it was the perfect time to turn this idea into a reality.”

From concept to execution, the release was written, recorded, and will now be released during the era of Covid. The two-sided effort offers a unique iteration of the band that flexes the entire spectrum of aggressive music – from grindcore to doom, hardcore to black metal, Side One features seven tracks, clocking in at less than seven minutes.

Side two consist of just one 11-minute epic in the track, “Emptiness”. The slow-moving sludge asserts a sonic experience that is equally dynamic and dismal.

For reference, side one embraces the influence of pillars like Napalm Death, Totalitär, Terrorizer, and Master, while “Emptiness” takes cues from the likes of Mournful Congregation, Paradise Lost, Evoken, and Katatonia.

Regarding the throwback format of the album sides, Mason adds, “When I was getting really into sludge and stoner metal like the Melvins and Eyehategod, they always referenced the B-side of My War,” Mason says. “Hearing bands talk about not just a record but a specific side of a record, I thought that was really cool and it always stuck with me.”
