The genre-flouting assembly of artists take on tracks from Elfman’s acclaimed 2021 LP, ‘Big Mess’.
Following his triumphant performance at Coachella in Danny Elfman: From Boingo to Batman to Big Mess and Beyond! and a massive preceding year that saw his first solo album release in nearly four decades, Danny Elfman has added more shelf life to the Big Mess-era with the announcement of, Bigger. Messier.
A collection of remixed, reimagined tracks from Elfman’s acclaimed 2021 LP, Big Mess, the revered composer has assembled a mind-boggling ensemble of talent to take on songs from the album and transform them into something not only new, but well outside the confines of any one genre.
Marking the very first time Elfman has helmed a remix project of this scale, the roster of contributors is sprawling to say the very least. Among the names guesting on the project include contemporaries like Trent Reznor and Iggy Pop as well as ascending phenoms like Ghostemane, Boy Harsher and Fever333. There are also cult championed outfits in the mix, with outfits like Japanese extreme music trailblazers Boris and LA noise punks HEALTH worked into the fold.
Zach Hill of Death Grips also is featured on the project in addition to a track from Squarepusher and Xiu Xiu, along with a roster of international composers, producers and renowned musicians.
Elfman explained the genesis of the project and the criteria for selecting his creative cohorts.
“At the onset of the Bigger. Messier. I asked the same thing of every artist: “express me through your own eyes.” Not only was I surprised at the artists that wanted to participate, but completely blown away by what everyone contributed. There’s a tremendous amount of diversity represented throughout, and I couldn’t be more excited to announce the record with Iggy’s version of “Kick Me,” which not only serves as a reinvention of the song vocally, but instrumentally as well. This record became such an enjoyment of experimentation and relinquishing control of my own work in a way that I’ve never done before.”
The project was spearheaded by Elfman along with longtime collaborators Stu Brooks & Berit Gwendolyn Gilma. The trio worked on pooling the right artists who understood the task and more importantly, who Elfman was a fan of. The result is a showcase of musical diversity that defies category boasting a tracklist oscillates between punk, industrial, electronic, experimental and well beyond.
To introduce the album, Elfman has unveiled his collaboration with punk icon Iggy Pop with the track, “Kick Me”. A complete rework of the original, Iggy’s signature vocals, combined with the instrumental reconfiguration from longtime collaborator Leron Thomas make for an effective glimpse into the scope of Bigger. Messier.
