From meme to dream: When We Were Hungry Festival is happening with Black Flag, Madball, Dropout Kings and more confirmed to perform

The two-day celebration is set to precede When We Were Young Festival – happening just two days before in the same section of Sin City.

Running with the mantra “making memes into dreams” and the hashtag #pancakesinthepit, Modern Day Escape bassist, songwriter and savvy content creator William Wenz is going all in on the idea of hosting a festival in a Denny’s parking. What began initially as a meme in response to the line-up of the ever-popular When We Were Young Festival line-up that swelled beyond comprehension with it’s massive performance roster, has now become a two-day festival happening just a day ahead of the juggernaut. It is also happening in Las Vegas – how is that for healthy competition.

The original meme that started it all.

Teaming with co-founder/director and artist manager Mal Levy, Wenz has launched When We Were Hungry Festival. The inaugural event is set for October 20th and 21st in Las Vegas, NV at the Rockstar Bar – Concert On The Green – a venue that is slated to host some 3,000 attendees.

The line-up embraces the independent acts spanning generations of rock, metal, punk and emo all packed into the two-day event. Among the names anchoring the inaugural bill include punk legends Black Flag, NYHC veterans Madball, emo champs Secondhand Serenade and pop punk stalwarts Every Avenue. When We Were Hungry will host more than 50 bands spanning three stages across two-days.

“Through the power of the internet, what started only as a humble meme has blossomed into such a beautiful lineup of artists both big and small,” says Wenz. “Defying even our own expectations, it has been a joy for us and the fans to watch the When We Were Hungry festival grow into a delicious piece of history!”

Levy added, “This festival is all about bringing people together–merging amazing legacy acts with the next generation. We quite literally went from a meme to a dream, and now an epic reality that is When We Were Hungry. This is our gift to you!”

Black Flag vocalist Mike Vallely echoed the sentiment of event organizers, “We are excited to be returning to Las Vegas to play the When We Were Hungry Festival at Rockstar Bar with Unwritten Law, The Dickies and so many more. We’ll be kicking off our 2022-2023 tour at this show, and I couldn’t think of a better way to get things started.”

Each festival day will culminate with an official afterparty indoors in collaboration with scene champions Come As You Are and their roster of guests for DJ sets and surprise performances from the likes of Social Order, Chris Donothon (The Medic Droid), Alesana and Michael Vampire (Vampires Everywhere) just to name a few. The afterparties will be 21+ only and sold as a separate ticket from the festival. Single night tickets or weekend passes are available – HERE. See the complete festival line-up below.
