The track is one of the most anticipated offerings from the 30th anniversary Blacklist compilation featuring 53 of music’s biggest and best doing their version of Black Album classics.
The long-awaited arrival of Metallica’s expansive compilation, Blacklist, has finally come through and among the standout offerings from the collection of classics includes a turbo-charged rendition of “Holier Than Thou” from none other than Corey Taylor.
One of the more anticipated tracks from the 53-artist collection, Taylor joined the likes of Elton John, Dave Gahan, Ghost, Royal Blood, Weezer, Ghost, St. Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers and even Miley Cyrus to pay tribute to one of the most iconic albums in not just in rock, but in music history. The eclectic roster of contributors formed an aggregate that not only illustrated the versatility of Metallica’s catalog, but underscored their continued influence spanning generations of musicians from all backgrounds, styles, and demographics.
In addition to presenting a fitting homage to Metallica, the spirit behind Blacklist supports the philanthropy that has been a bog part of the band’s ongoing legacy. Both Taylor and Metallica are putting the profits from their shared portion of the effort towards a designated charity of choice. All of Metallica’s revenue generated from the covers-project are going to their own All Within My Hands Foundation. Taylor has designated Tobie’s Small Dog Rescue to receive his funds generated from sales of the song.
In a recent interview with Ryan J. Downey in Knotfest exclusive, Taylor spoke in-depth about his admiration for Metallica and attributed the band’s influence to his own accomplishments in the culture. Citing Metallica’s Master of Puppets as the perfect album, he explains the album continues on the legacy of trailblazers like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, while creating a lane all their own.
As for Taylor’s take on the Black Album’s “Holier Than Thou,” there is little in the way of creative interpretation, with Taylor harnessing the horsepower and volatility that has been such an integral part to Metallica’s continued longevity. Channeling the ferocity of James Hatfield, Taylor offerings a paper tribute to Metallica while ensuring his signature is just as apparent.
