The deal will see an unprecedented 30th season and a collection of streaming films, two of which will premiere this year.
MTV Entertainment Studios announced big news for South Park fans today. The media giant shared the details of an expansive deal reached with the series’ creators in Trey Parker and Matt Stone that will extend the longest-running scripted series in cable television history well into 2027.
South Park will stick around for at least the next six years, stretching the show’s historic run into an unprecedented 30th season. In addition to the added tenure on the Comedy Central network, Parker and Stone will be getting to work on an additional 14 made for streaming original films featuring the South Park universe that will air exclusively on the Paramount+ platform. The fruit of the deal will yield almost immediately as two of the 14 films will premiere on the streaming service before the end of 2021.
“Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years,” said Parker and Stone. “When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way to produce the show during the pandemic, Chris (McCarthy), Nina (Diaz), Keyes (Hill-Edgar) and Tanya (Giles) were immediately supportive and enabled us to try something new that turned out to be really well received. We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats. It’s great to have partners who will always take a chance with us.”
Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of MTV Entertainment & CCO of Adult Animation with Paramount+ addressed the significance of the long term deal. “Matt and Trey are world-class creatives who brilliantly use their outrageous humor to skewer the absurdities of our culture and we are excited to expand and deepen our long relationship with them to help fuel Paramount+ and Comedy Central. Franchising marquee content like South Park and developing new IP with tremendous talent like Matt and Trey, is at the heart of our strategy to continue growing Paramount+.”
Even after it’s 25 year run, the series continues to remain an important fixture in the landscape of contemporary pop culture and swift, quick witted satire. South Park’s, ‘The Pandemic Special’, was cable’s #1 scripted telecast of 2020 and earned an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Animated Program category. The 2021 installment of the South ParQ Vaccination Special racked up a staggering 3.5 million viewers, becoming the number one cable telecast of year thus far.
