From deathcore to death metal and even a bit of post-hardcore supergroup action, this week’s selections are stacked.
This is a destructive week for new releases. We have a bit of death metal, sprinkled with some death metal, and a little bit more death metal with a side of deathcore. Honoring the late great Trevor Strnad, The Black Dahlia Murder has released their high energy holiday live stream, originally streamed last year. As always, The Black Dahlia Murder leaned into the humor of a death metal band doing a holiday livestream. This DVD includes sixteen tracks from the band, skits, guest appearances and commentary from the band.

Madrid-based Deathcore outfit Bonecarver (formerly Cannibal Granda) have been turning out the albums at record speed, on their 2nd in as many years. Carnage Funeral shows Bonecarver stretching their creative talents by employing classic deathcore riffs and structures sprinkled with some dark black metal magic throughout. Blast beats and breakdowns are aplenty for an exhilarating good time.

This album is downright bestial. Casket Robbery create a technical death metal infused wall of sound that is unrelenting from beginning to end. And, mad respect for a band that inspired a Satanic panic in 2022. This album certainly does sound like they are conjuring something from the depths. Maybe have snacks ready just in case the Dark Lord shows up.

Here we have the first half of a two-part project from the Utah-based Deathcore die-hards. This album shows that Chelsea Grin has no fear when it comes to traversing new deathcore territory with this album being darker and more theatrical than its predecessor. Suffer in Hell is as ominous as its name, with a looming atmosphere and destructive wave of sound.

Everyone, I’m calling it now, keep your eyes on Detherous. Their unrelenting riffs, bombastic drums, and savage vocals are impressive to say the least. Existing somewhere between 80s thrash and 90s death metal, Detherous is bringing forth that term we love over here at Knotfest “modern nostalgia”. This is accessible enough for those who are just getting into more extreme metal but it is still satisfying enough for the most hardcore death metal fans.

Let’s take a slight break from the punishing playlist I have set forth so far. Supergroup LS Dunes, featuring Circa Survive/Saosin’s Anthony Green, My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero, Coheed and Cambria’s Travis Stever, and Thurday’s Tim Payne and Tucker Tule, L.S. is greater than the sum of its already colossal parts. SURPRISE! The bastions of modern death metal Undeath have graced us with a surprise live album, recorded during their spring trek at Pop’s in Sauget, IL on May 27th, 2022. If you can’t see them live (which you absolutely SHOULD) you can enjoy all of their raucous energy on Live…From The Grave. My only question is this: if “It’s Time…To Rise From The Grave” but this is “Live…From the Gave”, when do they finally get to leave the grave? Or are we just all joining them six feet under?
