The time the world heard from veteran punk tandem Keith Morris (ex-Black Flag, Circle Jerks) and Dimitri Coats (ex-Burning Brides) as OFF! was back in 2014 with the release of the band’s third full length effort, Wasted Years. Though Morris has been especially active in his return with stalwarts Circle Jerks’, the frontman has asserted his prolific creative pace with the reactivation of his project with Coats’ in a new album launch as OFF! – the first in eight years.

Confirming a September 30th arrival date via Fat Possum Records, OFF! will debut their fourth full length album, Free LSD. Converging with a new roster of personnel that sees the band rounded out by new drummer Justin Brown (Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Herbie Hancock) and bassist Autry Fulbright II (…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead), the latest studio effort is part of an especially ambitious project that pairs the album as the original soundtrack to an accompanying film the band also has in the works.

OFF! founding member Dimitri Coats explains how the music for this particular go-round was especially free of creative and stylistic limitation. “Since thinking of the album as a soundtrack to a weird sci-fi movie gave us permission to experiment, and the film explains, in a fantastical way, the creation of the album, they both go hand in hand as an overall art project.”

The experimental ethos of the record is reiterated by instances of electronics executed by Coats, technically intense instances of percussion from Justin Brown, and even a guest saxophone appearance from Jon Wahl of Claw Hammer. Expanding their musical horizons, Morris explains how the band’s longevity has segued into a a need to think outside the box to soothe the band’s collective creative itch. Morris shared, “After making music for as long as I have, it was time to use a palette that includes lime green, turquoise, and magenta instead of the typical colors and shades that were involved in all of the other breakneck and car chase scenarios. Miles Davis with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters as opposed to Milo Goes to College.”

To introduce the album, OFF! has unveiled their first cinematic visual for the lead track, “War Above Los Angeles”. Recruiting David Yow of Jesus Lizard, Don Nguyn, Chloe Dykstra, James Duval, D.H. Peligro of Dead Kennedys to name a few, the cut offers a promising preview of the musical virtuosity and the overall vision packaged in the project. The track is vibrant, energized, and unconventional – anchored by the collective prowess of a proven foursome that color brilliantly outside the lines.

The band is set to hit the road for a full US tour later this fall in support of the release of Free LSD. The 26-date stretch kicks off late October and runs through mid-December, wrapping with a hometown showcase at The Lodge Room in Los Angeles. Tickets for the tour can be found – HERE.
