The release explores new creative terrain and positions Tankian at the forefront of a new augmented reality app, Arloopa, which will feature the the new EP for free.
Activist and acclaimed artist Serj Tankian, known for both his work in System of a Down, as well as his solo projects, has announced a new solo EP, Perplex Cities, due out October 21st via his label, Serjical Strike. This is the follow up to his 2021 EP, Elasticity. You can pre-save Perplex Cities HERE.
Serj Tankian elaborates on the process behind the album: “This whole collection of songs within ‘Perplex Cities’ is a completely different sound than what I’ve done before. More electronic, subtle and deeper in terms of its layers of presentation musically. ‘Perplex Cities’ gives off an aura that is unique and unlike my previous releases.”
The album, as with his previous work, will not only break new ground musically, but also technologically. Before being available on streaming platforms, each track from the EP will be made available via a free augmented reality app, Arloopa. The experience will feature Tankian presenting the tracks himself, appearing virtually in the same space as the listeners/viewers, explaining the music.
“I’m always trying to create new and interesting ways to connect with people via my music.” Serj explains. “We made some amazing videos for the last EP ‘Elasticity’, so I wanted to try something different for Perplex Cities. I love the idea of appearing in the room with someone listening to my music. It’s intimate, fun, and different.”
The first such immersive experience is available now, with the release of the first single, “Pop Imperialism” via the Arloopa app. Check it out HERE.
