The practitioners of spaghetti western shred return with a tail-whip of a title track.
One of the most exciting bands to emerge in the space of heavy music in recent memory, Spiritworld have had a banner 2022. Trekking as a standout on the Decibel Magazine tour earlier this year, as well as touring overseas with major festival plays including Bloodstock only to come back home and dominate with a blistering set at Psycho Las Vegas – the Sin City shredders have march confidently based on the strength of their debut full length, Pagan Rhythms.
Just last month, the band debuted new music with the menacing “Moonlit Toturre”, a track that included contributions from Dwid Hellion of Integrity and Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta on drums. Toeing a fine line between thrash metal and hardcore, laced with a bit of the occult for stylistic flair, the track offered a stirring precursor of the punishment that lay ahead.
Now, architect Stu Folsom and Spiritworld have unveiled their eagerly-awaited sophomore studio album with the eponymous, Deathwestern. Taking it’s title from the term used to coin the band’s take on Old West grit and heavy-wielding metallic guts, the album’s announcement has been paired with the release of the title track to officially usher in the era of the Death Western.
Folsom found it tough to contain his excitement when revealing the details of the album’s inception, “Super stooooooked to announce our new single and video DEATHWESTERN will be out! I started writing our new album right when I finished ‘Pagan Rhythms’. At that point, I had been playing guitar everyday for about a year and it was – no joke – the highlight of my days. Just banger riff after banger riff jumping out of the Viper Blood Tele. It took six months to get four songs together that I thought could stand up to Pagan. Then I knew I had another full length.”
Speaking specifically of the title track and the second single from the project, Folsom mentioned that the single offered a tip of the hat to a major stylistic influence, “This was the 4th song I wrote and it became the title track and our partner in crime and A&R extraordinaire, Mike Gitter’s favorite. When we finished tracking, I vividly remember getting chills. The intro whammys are 100% intentional White Zombie worship. ‘La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1’ was SUCH an important record for me. From samples, to groove, to incorporating horror into metal… definitely one of the most influential albums of my youth. I’m following that blueprint still. Always have. Can’t wait for this video to drop… finally!”
Opting to skip the traditional music video, Spiritworld teamed with director Todd Hailstone to showcase a western-themed short horror film – showcasing the band’s creative ambition and unique aesthetic in tandem with an absolute banger of a single. The film is available to stream below.
