The ‘On Top of the Covers’ project has been in the works since 2019 and features T-Pain ditching his signature auto-tune.
Back in 2019, T-Pain’s storied career took an interesting turn when the vocalist, who pioneered the auto-tune era, came away as the winner on the television series, The Masked Singer.
While T-Pain’s bread and butter had long been club anthems with memorable hooks, all brighten with auto-tuned flair, the world better understood the T-Pain’s natural voice that ultimately were the foundation of such a succession of hits.
It was then that T-Pain decided to switch things up and make the kind of record that not only asserted his range, but his repertoire as well.
The resulting passion project is T-Pain’s On Top of the Covers release – a compilation of cover tracks that features T-pain taking on Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life” (alongside NandoSTL), and a powerful punctuation in Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.”
Simply put, T-Pain’s take on Sabbath slaps. Ditching his auto-tuned signature, his natural voice rings powerful with a convincing, soulful rendition of an all-time, heavy metal classic.
T-Pain shared of the project, “This covers album has been years in the making. These songs are not what you’d expect when you hear that T-Pain is doing a covers album and that is what I think is cool about it.”
