A prequel to the 2009 horror hit is on its way to Paramount+
Jaume Collet-Serra rocked the horror world in 2009 with his underrated modern cult classic Orphan. The film follows the terrifying acts committed by a young girl named Esther (Isabelle Furhman), a mysterious orphan who is adopted by a well-meaning couple (Vera Farmiga & Peter Sarsgaard). Embracing the subset of horror films that focus on a demented child from hell, Orphan is an exuberant psychological thrill ride that’s all gas, no breaks.
Esther has since become a fairly notable and recognizable horror movie villain, mostly thanks to the powerhouse performance from Furhman. 13 years later, the time has come for a new chapter. Director William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside, The Boy) will be taking over for Collet-Serra in a prequel to his original film. And in a bizarre and fascinating choice, Furhman will be reprising her role as Esther. The actress is now 25 years-old but will be playing a 9 year-old child in the film, with Kennedy Irwin acting as a body double for select scenes.
“Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit, Orphan. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. Yet, an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous “child” at any cost.” Check out the trailer below.
‘Orphan: First Kill’ releases in select theaters, video on demand and will stream on Paramount+ August 19th 2022.
