Dream Theater Announce the Return of Drummer Mike Portnoy

- By Ramon Gonzales

The band have confirmed they are working on their 16th studio album, the first to feature Portnoy since 2009.

Progressive champions Dream Theater have announced that renowned drummer Mike Portnoy has returned to his post with the band. The announcement reestablishes the founding core of Portnoy with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung - the trio founded the band back in 1985 at the

Berklee College Of Music.

In addition to the news of Portnoy resuming his role with the band, Dream Theater have confirmed that they are working on their landmark 16th studio album, which will be the first to feature Portnoy on drums since Black Clouds and Silver Linings in 2009.

Portnoy spoke with sincere excitement about making his return and reconvening with Dream Theater. “I am overwhelmed with joy to be returning home and reuniting with my brothers! There is so much shared history between us all…so many memories, so much music…to think we’re coming up on 40 years since this journey began! The idea of creating new music together is so exciting and I absolutely cannot wait to hit the road and get to play live for a whole new generation of fans that weren’t ever able to see this lineup before…There’s no place like home!”

Founding bassist John Myung echoed that sentiment, while offering praise to long-running drummer Mike Mangini and the decade-plus he served as the band's drummer. "It's great to be back true to form with our original drummer Mike Portnoy. We started playing together as Majesty almost 40 years ago and I am excited to see what this next phase of Dream Theater creates for the future.  I wish nothing but the best for Mike Mangini for all the blood, sweat and tears he put into DT during his 13-year tenure with the band,"

During the band's more than three decade long tenure, Dream Theater has earned three GRAMMY® Award nominations and fially took home the hardware in 2022 with the GRAMMY® Award win in the Best Metal performance category for “The Alien”.

The band recently completed the inaugural DREAMSONIC Tour – a traveling progressive music spectacle that is slated to return to dazzle fans and showcase Dream Theater's unmatched live spectacle.
