In 2021, frontman and Fuming Mouth architect Mark Whelan was diagnosed with Leukemia. Whelan would endure a year-long battle, undergoing chemotherapy treatment and a bone marrow transplant. He would fid himself in remission by 2022 – focused on getting back to his craft as musician.

Whelan explained how art and life intersected in a way that forever changed his perspective. “What started as a fictional concept album became incredibly real. I was facing certain death, but as I kept writing the album it’s theme became clear. You could die tomorrow. Seize the day.”

Whelan worked closely with Kurt Ballou of Converge at his studio, God City, inSalem, Massachusetts. Ballou reached out to Whelan, learning of his battle with cancer and encouraged Wheland to get back to their previously scheduled recording session. As Whelan was enduring treatment, he was taking his initial concept and fleshing out new ideas, allowing his ongoing ordeal to work its way into the music.

To introduce the album, Fuming Mouth has delivered the lead single with “The Silence Beyond Life”. Anchored by a powerhouse performance from Whelan, the track showcases the full range of the project, complete with punishing riffs, guttural growls and big vocal melodies that stick.

Whelan said of the track, “‘The Silence Beyond Life’ is our most melodic and heaviest song to date drawing influence from God Macabre, Gorement, and other melodic Swedish death metal acts of the time like Therion and Cemetary. It’s a song about trying to live while longing to die and overcoming that.”
