Last month, extreme metal stalwarts Inter Arma set an expected due date for their first studio album since 2019's lauded, Sulphur English. Confirming April 26th, the band made the introduction official with the first selection from the Relapse Records' presentation - delivering a seven-minute spiral of dynamic, dismal dissonance in the album's title track, "New Heaven".
True to form, Inter Arma executes a masterful amalgam of doom, death, black and sludge that asserts a gargantuan wall - delivering a brand of extremity that is both precision-based and undeniably hard-hitting.
For the second preview from the pending release, Inter Arma have shared the staggering single, "Concrete Cliffs" - an entry that toes a fine line between "piledriving momentum and swirling oblivion" - in what is as accurate a descriptor as any.
Inter Arma's TJ Childers spoke about the significance of the track and how it serves as testament to the variety of influences that are at the core of the band. "While sonically 'Concrete Cliffs' doesn’t exactly traverse any new terrain in the Inter Arma universe-psychedelia, one note knuckle dragger riffs and Lizzy-esque harmony guitars-it marks the first time we’ve ever gone after a harsh verse/melodic chorus dichotomy within a song. It’s kind of a classic metal recipe that we put our own fucked up spin on. Hope ya’ll dig it."
Childers further added the personal triumph in finally ramping up towards the release of the long-awaited record. "New Heaven is the culmination of four years worth of adversity ranging from near death experiences, multiple member changes and of course a global pandemic. It marks a new chapter for us musically as we feel we've taken our songwriting to places we've never explored before. We're excited to have come out of the madness relatively unscathed and feel as though we've created something completely unique that will stand apart in the sometimes homogenous extreme music community."
Guitarist Trey Dalton reiterated, "This record, maybe more than our previous efforts, more fully represents what we're trying to accomplish. It's still very much us - you know, music made by dudes coming from disparate musical backgrounds and perspectives, but with a more collective and defined sense of purpose. Clarity in direction, maybe. Your mileage may vary, but we like it a lot, and we hope you do too."
Ahead of the release of New Heaven, Inter Arma have been confirmed to appear at this year's Roadburn Music Festival in The Netherlands. The April 18th performance will see the band showcase their latest effort, playing New Heaven in full for the specially curated set.
